What You Need to Know about South Calgary Sedation Dentist

Going to the dentist can sometimes be one of the greatest fears of some because they associate it with pain. Some basic dental procedures can cause discomfort to some patients especially kids and they carry this idea until they grow up. However, you cannot avoid dentists forever. If you are among those people who haven’t gotten over their fear of dentists, you might want to check out sedation dentistry and what South Calgary sedation dentist can do for you.

Sedation Dentistry Explained

Sedation dentistry is doing a dental procedure with the use of sedation methods. In medical procedure especially surgeries, general anesthesia is commonly used which knocks out a patient completely. This is not necessary in most dental cases so sedation is milder. It is only used for increased relaxation but it won’t make the patient unconscious.

Types of Sedation Used in Dental Procedure

  1. Enteral or oral sedatives

The most common oral sedative is diazepam. It is usually consumed at least an hour before the dental procedure. It leaves the patient awake but may cause drowsiness.

  1. Nitrous oxide

Nitrous oxide is a gas that causes relaxation. It wears off fast so after the dental procedure, there’s no need to take a lot of time in waiting for it to lose its effect.

  1. Intravenous sedative

IV sedation entails a patient to be sedated as an anti-anxiety method and is injected to a vein. It might cause unconsciousness but some IV sedatives may also keep you awake but unaware of what’s happening around you. Unlike nitrous oxide, IV sedation needs a bit more time to wear off so you might need to stay in the clinic for a while after the dental procedure.

How It Works

Before undergoing the procedure with a South Calgary sedation dentist, you should ask questions and discuss how it will go about. The dental specialist can explain it to you step by step and if there’s anything that you want to clarify or curious about, you can ask away.

The process differs according to the type of sedatives that will be used. If your dentist prescribes an oral sedative, instructions will be given to you so you can take it for an hour or so before the dental procedure begins. For nitrous oxide, on the other hand, no preparation is necessary because it will be provided by the specialist before, during and after the dental work. For intravenous sedation, certain things might be asked by the dentist for you to do as a preparation such as fasting few hours before the procedure or avoiding specific medications that might get in the way of the sedation.

Who Will Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

If you are one of the following, sedation before, during and after dental work might serve you well:

  1. General anxiety disorder
  2. Dental procedure phobia
  3. Low pain tolerance
  4. The small size of mouth that may cause pain or swelling during a dental procedure
  5. Resistance to local anesthesia

If any of the ones mentioned applies to you, tell your dentist right away and consult which type of sedation can work best for you. A South Calgary sedation dentist via may also help you with this as well.
